U17 Vietnam shares group with two rival teams, facing challenges in the Southeast Asian tournament

The group draw for the 2026 Southeast Asian U17 tournament presents a significant challenge for the U17 Vietnam team. Coach Cristiano Roland's squad is placed in Group A alongside host Indonesia, Malaysia, and Timor Leste.

U17 Vietnam shares group with Indonesia and Malaysia

On March 6, 2026, the Southeast Asian Football Federation (AFF) conducted the group draw for the 2026 Southeast Asian U17 tournament. The result makes Group A one of the most notable groups, featuring several strong teams from the region.

Accordingly, U17 Vietnam will compete against Indonesia—the tournament host—Malaysia, and Timor Leste. With the presence of two formidable rivals, Indonesia and Malaysia, Group A is considered quite challenging for the young Vietnamese players.

The tournament format this year is also very strict. Twelve teams are divided into three groups, but only the top team from each group and the best-performing runner-up will advance to the semifinals. This means every group stage match is decisive.

In the other two groups, Group B includes Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, and Philippines. Meanwhile, Group C consists of Australia, Cambodia, Singapore, and Brunei. Compared to these groups, Group A is predicted to be more intense, with multiple teams directly competing for advancement. U17 Indonesia holds the greatest advantage as the host. Meanwhile, U17 Malaysia aims to compete for at least the best runner-up position.

The 2026 Southeast Asian U17 tournament will take place from April 11 to 23, 2026 in East Java (Indonesia). According to information from the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI), matches will be held at Gelora Joko Samudro Stadium in Gresik and Gelora Delta Stadium in Sidoarjo.

Beyond its significance as a regional tournament, the 2026 Southeast Asian U17 tournament is also seen as an important preparatory step for the 2026 AFC U17 Championship finals in Saudi Arabia in May. This provides teams an opportunity to refine their squad and test formations before entering the continental stage.

For U17 Vietnam, the upcoming tournament holds special significance due to a previous unpleasant experience in Indonesia. At the 2024 Southeast Asian U16 tournament, the young Vietnamese team lost 0-5 to host Indonesia in the third-place match and finished fourth.

This reunion is therefore seen as an opportunity for Coach Cristiano Roland's team to demonstrate maturity and aim for deeper progress in the tournament.

However, the challenges for U17 Vietnam come not only from strong opponents but also from a dense schedule. Since the Southeast Asian tournament concludes shortly before the 2026 AFC U17 Championship finals, the coaching staff must carefully plan to ensure player fitness and squad readiness, avoiding unnecessary injuries before entering the major continental competition.
