UEFA imposes heavy penalty on Liverpool's Champions League opponent

Liverpool's Champions League round of 16 opponent has been dealt a severe blow ahead of the return leg at Anfield.

For the Champions League round of 16 second leg, Galatasaray will travel to Anfield without the fervent support of their traveling fans. The absence of away supporters makes Galatasaray's already difficult task even more challenging. Facing the reigning Premier League champions without their fans' backing is certain to significantly alter the dynamics of the tie.

The Turkish champions announced on their official website, confirming the severe penalty, stating: “Due to incidents involving fans during the UEFA Champions League away match against Juventus on February 25, 2026, the UEFA Disciplinary Committee has decided to fine our club 40,000 Euros and impose a ban on spectators for the next away match. We will appeal this decision to the UEFA Appeals Body.”

Galatasaray fans are banned from attending the away match at Anfield in the Champions League round of 16 second leg.

However, according to Reuters , the appeal has been rejected. This ban is a direct consequence of fan misconduct during the previous away trip to Juventus last week, where incidents in the stands overshadowed an exciting match on the pitch. Reports from the Allianz Stadium indicated that the behavior of the away fans exceeded acceptable limits. The most serious allegations involved pyrotechnics causing injuries to others.

Specifically, a man and his daughter were injured when a flare was shot towards the Juventus fan section in Turin. UEFA's zero-tolerance policy for such safety violations made a heavy penalty almost inevitable, despite the club's subsequent appeal efforts.

Despite the lack of away support, confidence within Galatasaray remains high following their impressive performance in the previous round. The team displayed remarkable mental fortitude by overturning a three-goal aggregate deficit against Juventus, before scoring two more in extra time to advance. They will also face a Liverpool side still searching for stability, as a 1-2 defeat to Wolves, the bottom-placed Premier League team, is their latest setback.

In this season's Champions League group stage, Galatasaray made headlines by defeating Liverpool 1-0. With high morale and their opponent's inconsistent form, Coach Okan Buruk's squad is sure to pose significant problems for the English representative in the first leg in Turkey, before heading to the away match at Anfield.

The first leg between the two teams is scheduled for 00:45 on March 11, with the return leg set for 3:00 on March 19.
