Manchester United won 5-1 at home to Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup, with 18-year-old Danish centre-forward Chido Obi-Martin scoring three goals to complete his hat-trick. Obi's performance was a repeat of the 2018/19 season when Mason Greenwood scored a hat-trick as United beat their opponents 4-3.
Manchester United's technical director Jason Wilcox and first-team coach Darren Fletcher were in attendance, with both of Fletcher's sons in the starting line-up. The Red Devils, who have won the FA Youth Cup 11 times, are the most titled club in the history of the tournament, and Chelsea are second on nine occasions and they have certainly put them to the test.
Striker Gabriele Biancheri slipped and lost possession of the ball in midfield, and United were counter-attacked by Chelsea and eventually conceded a goal, falling 1-0 at home. However, Adam Lawrence's Under-18s showed great quality and spirit to begin to dominate the game and score in quick succession.
Obi latched on to Jaydan Camarson's overhead pass, picked up the defender and looked comfortable to pick home the equaliser. The goal may seem simple, but it's not that easy, but a good scorer can make it easy. Coach Lawrence shouted at him, "Well done, Cheetos!"
James Scanlon, another goal-scoring attacker, stepped up and was also a key player in United's comeback in the No.7 shirt.
He latched on to crosses and cleared the ball from his team-mates to twice find the back of the net to make it 3-1 in the first half. The 18-year-old winger is already a player in Gibraltar's senior national team.
The second half became Obi's showtime, with both goals being classic "No.9" goals. First, Manchester United made a steal and crossed, and Obi easily pushed it into the net in front of goal, and the icing on the cake changed the score to 4-1.
In the end, the Danish demon seized the opportunity from a set-piece and sent the ball into the net in the chaos to lock the score above 5-1. Obi completed the feat of "wearing a hat" and took the match ball home. The Danish youngster kissed the Manchester United emblem and celebrated in front of the camera, knowing exactly where the camera was and the potential for stardom.
Smiling from the stands, Nick Cox, director of Manchester United's Academy Academy, was instrumental in the club's success in bringing in Obi, who was recommended and brokered by Academy chief scout Luke Fedorenko to sign Obi from Arsenal this summer. Garnacho was also an Academy talent brought back to Manchester by Cox, with the Argentine winger coming in from Atletico Madrid and leading Manchester United's youth team to victory in the FA Youth Cup last time in 2022.
Now, Obi and his team-mates have a chance to win the title again, with first-team boss Ruben Amorim being asked about Obi at his pre-match press conference last week has highlighted the English media's interest in the young striker, who could be knocking on the door of United's first team this season.
Hojlund and Zilkze have scored just 12 goals in all competitions, while Obi's triple win against Chelsea took his tally to 12 this season, with him making his youth debut on 6 October.
But first he has to play well in the youth team. Manchester United's Under-18s have reached the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup and will next face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, Obi's old club! The British media reminded the club that the biggest challenge now is to keep the young striker on his feet and not to repeat the mistakes of the likes of Aoki and Rashford and get lost in fame and fortune.
