Premier League Title Race Takes Dramatic Turn Overnight: Manchester City Draws Twice and Drops Points, Arsenal Wins Narrowly to Lead by 7 Points

Previously, we wrote about the title race situation in the five major leagues this season. La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1 have essentially lost all suspense. The only league with real suspense was the Premier League. Now, the Premier League title race has undergone a dramatic overnight shift: Manchester City dropped points and lost the initiative, while Arsenal secured a narrow victory to lead by 7 points, seemingly bringing the Premier League title race to an early "conclusion."

This week featured a double round of Premier League fixtures. In the early hours of March 5th Beijing time, during the 29th round, Manchester City hosted relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest. This was supposed to be a match for City to secure all three points and keep close to Arsenal. However, the team aiming for a fourth consecutive Premier League title, the Citizens, took the lead twice but were pegged back twice, ultimately dropping points. Some argue that a penalty not awarded for Haaland was a dubious refereeing decision, but the fundamental reason for City's dropped points, in my view, was their own approach. After taking the lead, they persistently passed backwards and sideways, showing no intent to press forward and kill the game. Only after being equalized did City remember they needed to attack again, but what was the result? Manchester City drew 2-2 with Nottingham Forest at home, once again faltering in the title race. In fact, this season, Manchester City has been more prone to stumbling than Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Arsenal secured a 1-0 away victory against Brighton, taking all three points. Some fans might say Arsenal's performance was a struggle and unattractive, but they managed a narrow win thanks to Saka's curling shot, earning three crucial points in the title race. While Arsenal's attack indeed lacks potency and Arteta's approach can seem overly cautious, Arsenal possesses a more reliable and solid defensive line compared to Manchester City. This could be the key factor enabling Arsenal to defeat Manchester City and win the Premier League title this season.

After 29 rounds of the Premier League,Arsenal has 20 wins, 7 draws, and 3 losses, totaling 67 points; Manchester City has 18 wins, 6 draws, and 5 losses, totaling 60 points.Arsenal has played one more game but now holds a 7-point lead at the top. Although there is still a match where Manchester City will host Arsenal in the remaining fixtures, City has lost the initiative in the title race. For City to win the title, they must avoid any further mistakes themselves and also hope that Arsenal slips up. Given the current defensive capabilities of both teams, Manchester City appears more likely to falter than Arsenal. Therefore, it seems about ninety-five percent certain that Arsenal will be crowned Premier League champions this season.
