MU's star defender sentenced to prison

Harry Maguire was given a 15-month suspended prison term after a Greek court maintained his guilty conviction. The case stemmed from an occurrence on Mykonos island in August 2020.

According to Sky Sports, the 32-year-old player was prosecuted on charges of minor assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery. The England international was found guilty on all three counts.

For nearly six years, this defender's legal team has been striving to clear his name. Maguire was not present at the latest court hearing as he is preparing with Manchester United for their match against Newcastle United early on March 5 (Vietnam time).

The judicial panel reduced the initial sentence from 21 months to 15 months and 20 days of suspended imprisonment. Additionally, Maguire was fined 1,500 euros (approximately 1,304 British pounds). Meanwhile, Maguire's brother Joe was acquitted of the attempted bribery charge. However, the appeals court upheld the serious assault and insulting a police officer convictions.

The incident occurred when Maguire was on vacation with his wife Fern, his sister Daisy, his brother Joe, and five others. His group was waiting for a taxi back to their villa when two Albanian men approached Daisy and attempted to engage with her.

Maguire testified that Daisy was injected with an unknown substance by these two men, causing her to become semi-conscious. The former Leicester player stated he tried to take his sister to the hospital, but instead was taken to a police station. There, he alleges he was beaten on the legs by uniformed officers and told his football career was over.
