OFFICIAL: Jack suspended for 6 matches for calling opponent 'gay'

Jack Fletcher, a young talent from Manchester United's academy, has been suspended for six matches for using an offensive term in an EFL Trophy match earlier this season.

Jack Fletcher received a direct red card in Manchester United U21's away match against Barnsley U21 last October. The Football Association (FA) has now released details from the disciplinary hearing, imposing a severe penalty on the young United player for the offense, which he did not contest.

Specifically, the FA report states that in the 62nd minute of the match, Fletcher engaged in a verbal altercation with a Barnsley player after the home team scored. The identity of the Barnsley player has been withheld. Referee Will Davis, standing about a meter away, stated that he heard the young United player shout at the opponent: “you’re a gay boy”, meaning "you are gay".

Fletcher did not deny saying the phrase but explained that in the second half he had suffered two fouls, including being pushed in the build-up to a goal and then having his Achilles tendon stepped on when the ball was out of play.

In his written statement, Fletcher said he had reported the latter incident to the referee and tried to remain calm. However, after Barnsley's third goal, the aforementioned opponent made remarks targeting his father Darren as well as his twin brother Tyler.

In response to those taunts, Fletcher admitted saying: “You seem to know a lot about me, are you a gay boy ?”.

The disciplinary panel accepted that Fletcher did experience physical contact, particularly to his Achilles tendon, which was supported by video evidence.

However, the breaches under FA Rule E3.2 carry a penalty range of six to twelve matches, with six matches being the minimum.

In a statement today, the 2007-born player said: “I sincerely apologize for the offensive language used in the heat of the moment. While I did not intend the phrase as a discriminatory slur, I fully understand that such language is unacceptable and I apologized immediately after the match.

I want to make clear that this momentary loss of control does not reflect my beliefs or values.”

Fletcher expressed remorse for the discriminatory language and stated in an interview that the words were uttered “in anger and frustration” due to the incidents during the match. The 18-year-old star also affirmed that he holds no discriminatory views, does not regularly use such language, and did not intend the remark to be a targeted insult.

In addition to the six-match suspension and a £1,500 fine, the FA has also ordered Fletcher to complete a mandatory face-to-face education program. This program must be completed by June 2, 2026, or he could face an indefinite suspension until it is finished.
