Manchester United legend forced to take shelter in basement due to missile attacks in Dubai

Amidst the echoing explosions in Dubai, Rio Ferdinand had to bring his wife and children to shelter overnight in the basement to ensure their safety.

In recent days, Rio Ferdinand's life in Dubai has taken a completely unexpected turn. The former England and Manchester United defender, accustomed to the pressures of the football pitch, now faces a real-world challenge as the city comes under attack from missiles and drones.

Ferdinand moved to Dubai in August 2025 with his wife Kate Ferdinand and their children. Their peaceful family routine was disrupted by successive explosions in the sky. The climax came when the whole family was advised to immediately go down to the basement shelter on the first night loud noises erupted across their residential area.

On his podcast Rio Ferdinand Presents, the 48-year-old football legend did not hide his emotions while sharing this extraordinary experience. “This week has been truly different for me, I'm not lying,” he shared. “First of all, this morning I felt really good because the whole family worked out together. Like during Covid, we are doing things we don't normally do together.”

This seemingly warm family atmosphere was set against a backdrop of great unease. Ferdinand added: “We did some home-schooling today too. It was terrifying to hear the sound of missiles, planes, fighter jets—I'm not even sure exactly what—flying overhead, and then hearing loud explosions. We didn't know the specifics of what it was.” The sounds raining down from the sky left his children confused and anxious.

In his role as a father, Ferdinand understood he had to be the pillar of emotional support. “Explaining to the children what is happening and helping them get through this moment is crucial, especially as the father in the family. You have to try to stay calm and help everyone stay as calm as possible.” It was a psychological challenge no less intense than any top-level match he had ever experienced.

The most notable moment was the decision to go down to the shelter. “I have to be honest, it was a pretty scary situation, but at the same time, strangely, I still felt quite safe and protected. My studio has now become a shelter.” The space originally meant for work has now become a place to ensure the safety of his entire family.

He elaborated on that first night: “On the very first night when the loud noises started, we were advised to go down to the basement and sleep there with blankets and mattresses. We are making reasonable use of this space.” From being a steel icon in the defense line, Ferdinand is now fighting a different battle, protecting his home amidst the unsettling sounds outside.
