Former Vietnamese national team player, Nguyễn Minh Nghĩa, has passed away in his hometown of Đồng Tháp.

Former player Vietnamese national team Nguyễn Minh Nghĩa has suddenly passed away in his hometown of Đồng Tháp at the age of 49. This news has left the Vietnamese football community in shock and mourning for a striker who left his mark during a transformative period for the nation's football.

Born and raised in the land of lotus flowers, Nguyễn Minh Nghĩa made a name for himself wearing the Đồng Tháp jersey before being called up to the national training squad in 1998. At the 2001 SEA Games, he was part of the U23 Vietnam squad and made an impact by scoring a goal in the opening 5-1 victory against U23 Brunei.

In 2002, this forward was given an opportunity on the national team by coach Henrique Calisto, participating in preparations for the 2002 AFF Cup. Despite high hopes, his career was later significantly affected by a prolonged leg injury.

The next turning point came in 2006 when Minh Nghĩa joined HAGL Club. During that two-season period, he quickly made a strong impression. In the opening match of the return leg, this forward scored the decisive goal, helping HAGL defeat Đà Nẵng 3-2 in stoppage time. Notably, on May 14, 2006, he scored a hat-trick within just 7 minutes against Sông Lam Nghệ An, contributing greatly to the 3-0 victory. These crucial contributions helped the Mountain Street team finish the season in 4th place overall.

The sudden passing of Nguyễn Minh Nghĩa, reportedly due to a stroke, has left many former teammates and fans deeply saddened.
