AFC has set the draw date for the 2027 Asian Cup, which also serves as the final deadline to resolve Malaysia's naturalization case. The CAS ruling could overturn the dynamics of Group F, directly impacting Vietnam's chances.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has officially confirmed the draw date for the 2027 Asian Cup final tournament groups. This date is also considered the final deadline for the continental football governing body to issue its ultimate ruling on the Malaysian national team's naturalization controversy.
According to the Asian Football Confederation's announcement, the draw ceremony for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup final tournament will take place on April 11 at the At-Turaif World Heritage Site (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia). Before this date, the AFC must finalize the list of participating teams, including conclusively resolving the case involving Malaysia's seven naturalized players.
The current focus is on the allegation that Malaysia fielded ineligible naturalized players during the qualifiers. Previously, FIFA had issued disciplinary sanctions against the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and seven Malaysian national team players. However, these penalties were suspended after FAM filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
The hearing took place on February 26 and the final verdict is expected to be announced this week. The decisions from CAS and AFC will directly affect the landscape of Group F in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, particularly the race between Malaysia and Vietnam.
Malaysia currently leads Group F with 15 points, holding a 3-point advantage over Vietnam. In the crucial match on March 31, Vietnam must win by a margin of at least 4 goals to take the top spot if all other results stand. However, Malaysia faces the risk of being handed 0-3 forfeit losses in their matches against Nepal and Vietnam for using ineligible players, which could mean a deduction of 6 points.
If AFC upholds the original results, Vietnam's chances of advancing remain very slim, as only the group winner secures a direct ticket to the finals. Conversely, if Malaysia is handed 0-3 forfeit losses and Vietnam is awarded a win, the situation in Group F would be completely reversed. If the two teams are level on points, their head-to-head record will be the primary deciding factor.
The 2027 AFC Asian Cup finals will be held in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, 2027, across 8 stadiums in 3 cities: Riyadh, Jeddah, and Al Khobar. The King Fahd Sports City stadium in Riyadh has been selected to host both the opening match and the final. Clearly, all eyes are on the ruling before April 11, a moment that could determine the fate of both Malaysia and Vietnam on their journey to the continent's biggest football festival.
