Manager Arne Slot offered significant insights after Liverpool's defeat to Wolves in the 29th round of the Premier League.
Liverpool suffered a thoroughly forgettable defeat at the home of bottom-placed Wolves in the 29th round of the Premier League. This result not only exposed the weaknesses of the reigning champions but could also see them knocked out of the top five, having played one more match than their rivals.
After the match, manager Arne Slot did not hesitate to criticize his players' performance at Molineux, particularly in converting chances into goals.
He stated: "It was a poor result. The first half was not good at all. In the second half, we showed more urgency. We got closer and closer to scoring, but then conceded almost immediately from the first time they got the ball into our penalty area. We responded right away, first with a shot that hit the post, then with Mo's equalizer. We also came very close to a decisive goal twice, once from a counter-attack by Mo Salah and once from a header by Virgil.
In the end, we conceded from a deflected shot, which wasn't even a clear chance. Of course, that is disappointing, especially knowing how hard we had to work to score a goal. Recently, we've mostly scored from set-pieces. We create enough opportunities but struggle to convert them. Conceding two goals is too many to get a positive result."
At this stage of the season, The Kop has scored only three first-half goals in away Premier League matches.
Addressing this concerning situation, Slot admitted: "Last week we started very well and scored three goals. But there are always two teams on the pitch, and usually our opponents are more energetic in the first half than in the second. Sometimes you need to create something in the first half to force them to keep moving and expend energy.
We controlled the ball a lot, and in the second half they faded a bit. So the second half became a bit more open. But overall, we hardly allowed them clear chances, and we didn't create too many ourselves either, though still more than them. Yet, the final result was still a 1-2 defeat."
When asked if this defeat was more disappointing because Liverpool once again lost momentum after winning three consecutive domestic matches prior, the Dutch strategist replied: "That's a fair point. We are losing too many matches and dropping too many points. Did the goal come in stoppage time again? Yes. All three of our defeats in the last 22 matches have happened that way, meaning we conceded in added time."
This result cost Liverpool the chance to break into the top three. They remain stuck in fifth place with 48 points, three points behind Aston Villa and Man Utd above them, but having played one more match.
