Barcelona's stunning comeback effort almost overturned Atlético Madrid's 4-0 first-leg lead in the Copa del Rey semifinals. Nevertheless, the 3-0 win by the Catalan team in the second leg could not stop Rojiblancos from securing a spot in the final for the first time since the 2012/13 season.
Barcelona started at a high tempo, aiming to chip away at Atlético's four-goal aggregate lead. However, they suffered an early setback when Jules Koundé was forced off after just 11 minutes. Despite controlling 70% of possession and pinning the opponent back for much of the first half, the home team still encountered stubborn resistance from Rojiblancos, with even Antoine Griezmann often dropping deep to help in defense.
The French forward registered Atlético's first shot on target before the 30-minute mark, but Joan García stayed focused to save the former Barcelona player's attempt. The hosts' sustained pressure finally paid off when Marc Bernal met Lamine Yamal's cross and scored, sending the stadium into a frenzy.
Barcelona continued to push forward, but advancing their defensive line near the halfway line left them vulnerable to counterattacks. Ademola Lookman almost dashed the home side's hopes with a dangerous diving header. Late in the first half, Pedri earned a penalty in stoppage time, and Raphinha made no mistake, sealing a 2-0 lead before the break.
Entering the second half, Atlético showed more determination. However, as Barcelona gradually regained control, Juan Musso made an excellent double save to deny the hosts a third goal. Facing increasing pressure, Diego Simeone introduced Alexander Sørloth to intensify the attack on Barcelona's defense. Yet, time-wasting became a familiar tactic for the visitors as they continued to defend relentlessly in the remaining over 30 minutes.
Alejandro Balde, who replaced Koundé, also had to leave the pitch in the 70th minute, just before Barcelona earned their 10th corner, highlighting their complete dominance. From this set piece, Bernal completed his brace with a volley following a fine assist from João Cancelo.
In the remaining time, Atlético could do little but retreat into a defensive shell as Barcelona deployed up to five attacking players in advanced positions. Still, the 3-0 scoreline was not enough to overturn the aggregate result.
This outcome means Barcelona cannot defend the Copa del Rey title they won last season, while Atlético Madrid will face either Real Sociedad or Athletic Bilbao in the final.
