Vietnamese Futsal Confident on the New Journey

The journey of the Vietnamese women's futsal team at the 2026 ASEAN Women's Futsal Championship concluded with a 4-1 victory over Indonesia in the third-place match. A bronze medal was not the initial target when coach Nguyễn Đình Hoàng and his squad set out, but the way the team finished the tournament still opens up much hope for the path ahead.

In reality,Vietnamese women's futsalhas yet to overcome the two strongest forces in the region: Thailand and Australia. Thailand, with home advantage, a long-standing grassroots foundation, and systematic investment, reclaimed the "debt" of their semifinal loss to the Vietnamese team.

Australia, though not traditionally part of Southeast Asia, with its developed sports foundation and professional orientation, promises to go far. Behind them, the Philippines will undoubtedly continue to accelerate.

Indonesia, Malaysia, and Myanmar are also showing determination to close the gap. A new race in regional women's futsal has truly begun.

In that context, the bronze medal forthe Vietnamese women's futsal teamholds significance as a spiritual foundation. The current squad blends experience and youthful energy.

Many pillars matured from the systematic futsal program of Ho Chi Minh City's Thái Sơn Nam Club, such as Thanh Ngân, Phương Anh, Nguyệt Vi..., continue to play core roles. They understand futsal's specifics and have been honed in a professional environment.

Alongside them, young faces like goalkeeper Trần Thị Trang, Vũ Thị Hoa, or Ánh Mỹ were given opportunities and showed signs of maturity. The excellent performance of Trần Thị Trang in the third-place match clearly demonstrates that if trusted regularly, the next generation can mature rapidly.

The failure to defend the championship title is also a warning. Vietnamese women's futsal needs more synchronized investment, from the national team to the domestic league system. The current National Women's Futsal Championship still has a modest number of participating teams and limited competitiveness, leaving players lacking a continuous high-level competitive environment.

As FIFA has officially established a ranking system and the Women's Futsal World Cup has been launched, countries will invest more heavily to improve their standing. If it does not transform in time, Vietnamese women's futsal risks being left behind in an increasingly fierce race.

Coach Nguyễn Đình Hoàng cannot rely indefinitely on talent from 11-a-side football. Given the busier club competition schedules, clubs may be reluctant to release players during crucial overlapping periods.

Vietnamese women's futsal currently still relies heavily on benefactor Trần Anh Tú, who has maintained the professional Thái Sơn Nam HCMC Club for many years. The sport still needs a more distinct, diverse, and sustainable training ecosystem to produce dedicated players specifically for futsal. This is not just about one tournament, but a long-term strategy.

Furthermore, a characteristic of women's football in general and women's futsal in particular is that player form is often difficult to maintain consistently over long periods. Declines in fitness, psychology, or injuries can have a clear impact. This increasingly demands upgrades to the sports science support system, training methodologies, and squad depth.

Despite much work remaining, the 4-1 victory over Indonesia reaffirms that Vietnamese women's futsal has not lost its fighting spirit. The players knew how to rise after a fall, competed with determination, and closed the tournament on a positive note. The bronze may not fully satisfy aspirations, but it builds momentum for greater goals in 2026.

The road ahead is certainly not smooth, and Vietnamese women's futsal has learned many valuable lessons.
