A team caused a shock at the Asian tournament with an average height under 1.50m.

The Bangladesh women's team drew attention at the 2026 Asian Cup for having an average height of only 1.48m, the lowest in the entire competition.

When the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) released the physical statistics of teams participating in the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup, Bangladesh immediately became the focus. It wasn't due to their performance, but because their average height was a mere 1.48m – the lowest figure in the tournament and a rare sight at a continental-level competition.

The 1.48m mark shows a significant gap compared to the general average. The second shortest team, Vietnam's women's team, still has an average height of 1.60m, which is 12 cm taller than Bangladesh. Most other teams range from 1.60m to 1.65m, while physically stronger squads like Australia and China are even more dominant.

Looking at individual players, the difference becomes even more pronounced. The South Asian team has several players with heights around 1.40m. In modern football, where speed, strength, and aerial ability are crucial, such a physical stature is clearly a major disadvantage in both duels and aerial challenges.

Notably, Bangladesh is already among the countries with a low average female height globally, around 1.52m – similar to Cambodia and Malaysia. However, the fact that a national team's average is even lower than the general population's is surprising. Typically, professional athletes possess a physical foundation superior to the general average.

Nevertheless, judging their professional capability solely based on the 1.48m figure would be a mistake. In the qualifiers, Bangladesh created a major upset by topping Group C ahead of Myanmar, Bahrain, and Turkmenistan, thereby securing their historic first-ever spot in the AFC Women's Asian Cup finals.

In the 2026 Asian Cup group stage, they are placed in a very tough group with China, Uzbekistan, and North Korea – teams with far superior physicality and class. Bangladesh's realistic goal is likely just to gain experience. But regardless, this women's team with an average height under 1.50m is writing a unique story in Asian football.
