Having almost fulfilled the criteria to play for Malaysia, the naturalized talent revealed his strong desire to take the field and openly shared his hope for a rematch with Vietnam in the near future.
Johor Darul Ta'zim winger Manuel Hidalgo admitted he is counting down the days until he officially qualifies to play for the Malaysian national team after completing all necessary naturalization procedures.
According to Astro Arena reporter Zulhelmi Zainal Azam, the crucial date for Hidalgo will be after April 4th. At that point, the former Sri Pahang FC player will fully meet the residency requirements, opening the door for a potential national team call-up.
Speaking after the match against Penang FC, the 1999-born star could not hide his excitement. "I am very eager, truly cannot wait any longer. Representing the national team is a great honor. They opened the door for me back in 2021 when I was just 22 years old," Hidalgo expressed.
Joining JDT and quickly proving his worth with pace, technique, and the ability to create danger on the flanks, Hidalgo has gradually become one of the key figures for Malaysia's most successful club. This season, he continues to maintain consistent form, contributing to the impressive run of the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium's home team.
Hidalgo's eligibility to play for the national team is expected to provide Malaysia with more diverse attacking options as the team aims to go far in regional and continental competitions, starting with the upcoming rematch against the Vietnam national team in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers on March 31st. The 27-year-old's penetrating ability and bold play are seen as a fitting piece for the team's youth-oriented squad development plan.
Not only Hidalgo, several other foreign players at JDT are also finalizing their naturalization processes. If all goes smoothly, the Malaysian national team will gain additional quality options, increase squad depth, and foster positive competition during the crucial upcoming period.
