After a time of great upheaval at Manchester United, fresh disclosures from the old coaching team of Ruben Amorim are drawing considerable focus.
Adelio Candido, the trusted right-hand man of the Portuguese strategist, has spoken for the first time about the reasons for the failure at Old Trafford and revealed noteworthy details concerning tactical implementation.
Candido has been a long-time collaborator of Amorim since his days managing Casa Pia in 2018. When Amorim took over Manchester United, he brought along his familiar staff and assumed the role of first-team coach. However, the journey at the Theatre of Dreams did not unfold as expected. In an interview with Portuguese media, Candido admitted that his greatest regret was the coaching staff's tactical ideas not being fully executed on the pitch.
"An experience is always an experience; whether the outcome is good or bad, we always learn lessons. In Manchester, I genuinely liked the city and how the fans enjoy football—they focus more on long-term projects rather than immediate results. What I disliked the most was certainly the feeling that our ideas were not being implemented completely."- Candido shared.
Under Amorim, Manchester United persisted with the 3-4-3 formation that had brought him great success at Sporting Lisbon. Despite facing media pressure and opinions that the squad was unsuited to this system, Amorim did not alter his tactical belief. That rigidity partly reflected the young manager's character but also became a contentious topic as on-field results remained inconsistent.
After Amorim left his post, Michael Carrick was given the opportunity and quickly made a difference. With largely the same squad, Manchester United's form improved markedly, even defeating both Manchester City and Arsenal, thereby climbing into the Premier League's top four and opening up a chance for Champions League qualification.
Currently, Amorim's future remains a major question mark. After leaving Old Trafford with a compensation package reaching £15.9 million, the Portuguese strategist awaits a new opportunity to prove his capability. As for Manchester United, the revival under Carrick shows the team still possesses considerable potential if a common understanding between tactics and personnel can be found.
