Vietnam's women's futsal team widens path to Southeast Asian semifinals after comeback against Myanmar

In a spirited comeback, Vietnam's women's futsal team overcame Myanmar with a 5-2 victory, opening a clear path to the semifinals of the ongoing Southeast Asian women's futsal tournament.

Right from the opening whistle, Myanmar started confidently and applied significant pressure. In the initial minutes, goalkeeper Thuy Linh was repeatedly forced to make crucial saves against dangerous attacks. However, the red-shirted team gradually regained their footing and orchestrated several coherent attacking combinations. Anh My and Nguyet Vi consistently found themselves in scoring positions, but the final finishing touch lacked a bit of fortune.

A surprise occurred in the 9th minute when Myanmar opened the scoring with an audacious chip from midfield, looping the ball over goalkeeper Thuy Linh. This conceded goal forced the Vietnamese team to push their formation higher. In the 16th minute, from Thuy Trang's throw-in, Nguyet Vi controlled the ball neatly and fired a decisive shot, equalizing the score at 1-1. However, just before the first half ended, Myanmar capitalized on a scramble in front of the goal to retake the lead, closing the first 20 minutes with a 2-1 advantage.

Entering the second half, the Vietnamese team displayed a completely different demeanor. Immediately in the 20th minute, Nguyet Vi completed a brace with two consecutive shots, leveling the score at 2-2. The boosted morale helped the players execute smoother and more effective plays. In the 21st minute, from a well-placed cross by Thuy Trang, Bien Thi Hang surged forward to volley the ball accurately, putting Vietnam ahead 3-2. By the 27th minute, Bien Thi Hang herself completed a double with a beautifully coordinated play, extending the lead to 4-2.

In their effort to find a consolation goal, Myanmar decided to employ a power-play in the final 10 minutes. However, when the opponents committed their sixth cumulative foul, Vietnam was awarded a 10-meter penalty. In the 39th minute, Bien Thi Hang coolly converted the shot, completing her hat-trick and sealing the 5-2 victory.

With this result, the Vietnamese team has a very strong chance of advancing to the semifinals, as in the subsequent match, the Philippines face difficulty defeating Australia, especially by a large enough margin to surpass our goal difference.
