Manchester United has yet to start contract extension talks with the 20-year-old rising star, sparking questions about his future after he previously requested to leave and has only recently regained his place under the interim coach.
Manchester United is currently in a stalemate regarding contract discussions with Kobbie Mainoo, as Old Trafford has reportedly not begun negotiations to extend the young midfielder’s deal. According to The Sun, although Mainoo’s current contract runs until 2027 with an option for an additional year, the long-term future of the 20-year-old remains uncertain.
Sources reveal that Mainoo had proposed a loan move last summer when he was not favored by coach Ruben Amorim. Under Amorim, the English midfielder did not start a single match, raising serious doubts about his role in the first team. However, the situation has improved since Michael Carrick was appointed interim manager, allowing Mainoo to return to the starting lineup.
Carrick, who has worked with Mainoo since the player was around 13 or 14 years old, has praised his protégé. He described Mainoo as “a great talent” and emphasized that the most important thing now is for the young midfielder to naturally regain his match rhythm. Rather than overwhelming him with detailed instructions, Carrick has chosen to limit his interventions, offering only minor advice on positioning and tactics, trusting Mainoo’s football instincts.
At the national team level, Mainoo has represented England 10 times but has yet to play under coach Thomas Tuchel. Nevertheless, the German manager confirmed that Mainoo “is back on the radar” and remains part of future plans, especially as England prepares for upcoming friendlies and the approaching World Cup.
With no concrete extension moves from Manchester United yet, Mainoo’s future remains uncertain. Whether he commits long-term to Old Trafford or seeks new opportunities will largely depend on his actual role in the squad and the club’s development direction in the near future.
