Victor Osimhen acknowledged that he wishes Galatasaray could avoid facing Liverpool in the Champions League round of 16 draw on February 27.
In the early hours of February 26, Galatasaray faced a challenging match against Juventus. The Serie A side scored three consecutive goals to level the aggregate score at 5-5, forcing the match into an additional 30 minutes. During extra time, Osimhen scored to put Galatasaray ahead on aggregate, before Baris Alper Yilmaz sealed the ticket to the next round for the Turkish champions.
In the round of 16, Galatasaray will face either Liverpool or Tottenham, with the draw taking place at 6:00 PM on February 27.
Notably, Galatasaray had previously defeated Liverpool in this season’s league phase. At home last September, Osimhen’s first-half penalty secured a 1-0 victory over Arne Slot’s squad.
When asked if he preferred to face Liverpool or Tottenham in the round of 16, Osimhen told CBS Sports:“Honestly, playing Liverpool now would feel like ‘revenge.’ It’s the same for any team... I haven’t thought too much, but I’d rather avoid Liverpool.”
“But if we do get them, we will fight until the end, although it definitely won’t be easy. This is the Champions League, no opponent is easy. Just look at how Bodo/Glimt are performing in this competition,” Osimhen added..
“If you want to win the title, you have to face big teams and make your mark. We played Liverpool, but not at Anfield yet. If we meet them again, it would be a fantastic match. I believe we can compete; of course, it will be tough, but we have a strong fighting spirit,”the main striker of Galatasaray added.
Osimhen is having a breakout season with Galatasaray. After 24 matches, the Nigerian forward has scored 16 goals and provided 5 assists. In the Champions League alone, he has netted 7 goals in 8 games.
Throughout his career, Osimhen has scored 167 goals in 289 appearances. He was pursued by several Premier League clubs for years but ultimately chose to play for Galatasaray.
