The FA has imposed severe sanctions on Chelsea and West Ham after a heated group altercation in the London derby at the Premier League, forcing both clubs to face substantial fines and strict reprimands.
The English Football Association has formally issued penalties to Chelsea and West Ham following the intense collective clash during the London derby match in the Premier League. The incident took place at Stamford Bridge and quickly escalated beyond control, compelling the FA to intervene with strict disciplinary measures.
The match, already played at a high intensity, erupted in the final minutes when West Ham’s Adama Traore collided and exchanged words with Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella. Tensions rose further as Joao Pedro rushed in to support his teammate, triggering a swarm of players from both sides to push, shove, and argue near the sideline. The referees took several minutes to restore order amid the chaotic atmosphere.
After reviewing video footage and referee reports, the FA concluded that neither club adequately controlled their players' conduct according to regulations. In a statement released on February 25, the English football governing body confirmed: Chelsea was fined £325,000, while West Ham United was penalized £300,000 due to involvement in a "mass confrontation" during the 90th minute of the match on January 31, 2026. Both teams admitted failing to prevent inappropriate and provocative behavior from their players. The fines were issued following a hearing by an independent disciplinary committee.
Although the sanctions focus on collective responsibility, the one-on-one clash between Traore and Cucurella is seen as the main trigger. Traore’s physical style combined with Cucurella’s aggressive defending led to repeated clashes throughout the second half. When the Spanish defender was accused of blocking Traore near the corner flag, tensions flared instantly, and Joao Pedro’s involvement escalated the situation out of control.
According to current Premier League rules, clubs must maintain strict discipline. Chelsea’s higher fine is believed to relate to their recent disciplinary record, having attracted attention for an increased number of yellow cards this season.
After the match, coach Liam Rosenior met with players to reflect on handling tense situations. Meanwhile, West Ham officials also convened with manager Nuno Espírito Santo and captain Jarrod Bowen to address and correct on-field behavior.
In the league standings, Chelsea currently sit fifth with 45 points, continuing their pursuit of a Champions League spot. Conversely, West Ham languish in 18th place with 25 points, facing relegation threats and needing to quickly stabilize their morale during this crucial phase of the season.
