The trial concerning Harry Maguire, involving accusations of assaulting police and attempted bribery, has been pushed back to March 4th, but it will probably face another postponement.
According to the Daily Mail, there is a strong possibility that the retrial of Harry Maguire will be postponed for the fifth time. If this happens, the prospect that the case will never reach court becomes more apparent, as in Greece, the statute of limitations applies after 8 years, which for Maguire would be August 2028.
If the retrial does occur, Maguire is not required to be physically present. His legal team will strive to clear his name if the trial actually happens in Syros.
The defender Manchester United has consistently denied all charges. He told BBC Sport in 2020: “It’s not pleasant to see negative stories about myself. No one knows exactly what happened that night. You either believe it or you don’t. Even after the trial, the accounts told were unbelievably far from the truth. So, my character and who I am won’t change. I’m mentally strong and I will get through this. My conscience is clear. I know exactly what happened that night.”
Maguire was arrested and found guilty in 2020 in Syros, Greece, during a holiday with family and friends, facing serious assault charges, resisting law enforcement, and multiple attempts at bribery.
The accusations stem from an altercation with police, which led to Maguire being taken to the station and later accused of attempting to bribe officials. He was convicted and sentenced to 21 months suspended imprisonment. However, Maguire appealed, and under Greek law, the original verdict was immediately annulled.
The first retrial was postponed in May 2023 because Maguire’s lawyer was unavailable due to scheduling conflicts. The second delay occurred in February 2024 due to a lawyers’ strike. The next two retrials were also postponed, with the latest date set for March 4th.
While waiting to see if the retrial will proceed as scheduled, Maguire is focusing on his professional career. He is making a strong comeback under coach Michael Carrick, helping Manchester United achieve four wins and one draw in their last five matches.
Maguire’s recent form at Man Utd has also raised the possibility of a recall to the England national team for the 2026 World Cup. Coach Thomas Tuchel said last month that the defender is “back in consideration” as he prepares to finalize the squad for the tournament.
