Mourinho exploits UEFA loophole ahead of the big clash with Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho utilized UEFA rules to avoid attending the press conference before the Champions League return leg with Real Madrid, after being banned from coaching due to a red card in the opening match.

Jose Mourinho once again became the center of attention by choosing not to attend the pre-match press conference for the Champions League play-off second leg between Benfica and Real Madrid.

Benfica travel to Santiago Bernabeu carrying the disadvantage of a 0-1 loss from the first leg. The match at Estadio da Luz last week was decided by a spectacular goal from Vinicius Junior. However, the sporting result was quickly overshadowed by allegations of racism involving young player Gianluca Prestianni and Vinicius. Referee Francois Letexier had to initiate UEFA's anti-racism protocol after receiving complaints from the Brazilian star.

After the match, Mourinho sparked controversy by claiming that Vinicius' celebration provoked the home crowd. His comments faced strong backlash from fans and experts alike, including Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany.

Given the tense atmosphere, the 63-year-old coach decided to remain “silent.” According to UEFA Champions League Regulation 79.04, if a head coach is suspended, the club can send an assistant to the press conference instead. Mourinho received a red card in the first leg and is banned from coaching the match in Madrid, meaning he is not required to appear before the media.

Assistant Joao Tralhao will represent Benfica at the pre-match press conference. According to Sky Sports, Mourinho’s absence from the media is fully compliant with current regulations and does not breach any UEFA rules.

This move is seen as Mourinho’s way to reduce media pressure ahead of the crucial game. Benfica need a victory at Bernabeu to keep hopes alive, while Real Madrid only need to maintain their narrow advantage to advance.
