Following the tough win at Everton, Michael Carrick acknowledged that MU needs to enhance many aspects, yet he confirmed the team’s morale and determination are on the correct path.
Manchester United leaves Hill Dickinson with valuable three points, but coach Michael Carrick understands this was not an easy win. Against a fiercely competitive Everton applying constant pressure, MU had to focus on defense at many moments before finding the decisive breakthrough in the second half.
Carrick admitted: “Absolutely. Tonight we had to work very hard. Credit to Everton for making it difficult.” He was particularly pleased with his players’ defensive spirit: “The team’s mentality and defensive organization were top class. Ultimately, keeping a clean sheet was fantastic.”
However, the English coach also reminded: “We can play better than this, much better in certain areas.”
The match-winning moment came in the 71st minute during a sharp counterattack. Matheus Cunha delivered a long through ball, Bryan Mbeumo controlled smoothly and crossed for Benjamin Sesko to finish with a one-touch strike into Everton’s net.
Carrick praised: “A brilliant finish. It was a ruthless strike. He scored with real confidence.” He also highlighted the roles of Cunha and Mbeumo: “That was an excellent through pass, and the subsequent plays completed the goal.”
Sesko continues to prove his worth as a “super substitute.” When asked about the Slovenian striker’s potential as a starter, Carrick shared: “Ben is in good form… Patience is one thing, but nurturing and developing him is also crucial. He will be an important player for us for a long time.”
On the other hand, Everton created quite a few threats, especially in the final minutes. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens made several key saves, including an outstanding stop in the 83rd minute. Carrick praised: “He made some truly excellent saves. He looked very calm and composed in a tough environment.”
This victory lifts MU to fourth place with 48 points, three points ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool, and reduces the gap to Aston Villa to just three points. Carrick emphasized: “I’m very pleased with the result and the fighting spirit… But there are still many positive things we need to show.”
With the current mindset, MU is demonstrating that they are not only fighting for each win, but also aiming for a bigger long-term goal in the race for the top 4.
