Pep Guardiola addresses Rodri's future amid speculation that Real Madrid and Barcelona are keen to sign him, with his contract at Man City nearing its last year.
Rodri's future at Man City suddenly heats up following recent remarks from coach Pep Guardiola, in a context where Real Madrid and Barcelona are reportedly closely monitoring the Spanish midfielder's situation.
Man City recently secured a 2-1 victory over Newcastle to keep pace with Arsenal in the Premier League title race. However, off-field matters are causing concern among Etihad fans, as Rodri's contract is set to expire at the end of next season.
According to German sources, both Real Madrid and Barcelona are interested in acquiring Rodri this summer. The 29-year-old midfielder is valued at around £66 million, but the actual fee could be much higher, especially after winning the 2024 Ballon d'Or and maintaining top form.
Before the match against Newcastle, Pep Guardiola was directly asked about the future of his prized player. The Spanish manager did not shy away: “I really hope that happens. Rodri is Rodri. As he gets older, he becomes smarter and understands the game better. Some players always shine on the big stage and during tough moments. Rodri is one of them.”
Nonetheless, financial realities force Man City to plan carefully. If they don't extend his contract soon, they may consider selling Rodri this summer to avoid losing him for free in 2027.
In the worst-case scenario, Man City already has a replacement plan. Nottingham Forest's young midfielder Elliot Anderson is a target of special interest for the Etihad club. The 22-year-old is emerging as one of the most impressive central midfielders in the league and has also been called up to the England national team by coach Thomas Tuchel.
Forest is reportedly demanding at least £80 million for Anderson, unless they are relegated. In this context, Rodri’s future promises to be one of the most notable transfer stories of the summer 2026.
