Vietnam National Team Wins at the Greatest Moment in Asian Cup History

The poll titled “Most Memorable Moment in the History of Asian Women's Football,” launched by the AFC, has come to an end, with the Vietnam women's team narrowly taking the top spot.

The poll named “The Greatest Moment in the History of Asian Women's Football” initiated by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) officially closed with surprising results. The Vietnam women's team impressively secured the leading position after intense competition against several strong football nations in the region. This is considered a special piece of good news for Coach Mai Đức Chung and his squad ahead of the continent’s important tournament.

The voting campaign was part of a media series leading up to the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup, scheduled to take place in Australia in early March. The AFC curated a shortlist of nine memorable moments representing key milestones in Asian women's football history. Included in this list was Vietnam’s achievement of qualifying for the 2023 World Cup, marking a historic milestone.

The moment for Vietnam was titled by the AFC as “Overcoming Adversity,” highlighting the challenging journey of the team during the 2022 Asian Cup playoffs – which also served as the qualification for the 2023 World Cup. The approximately 35-second video posted by AFC showcased crucial goals and images reflecting the resilient spirit of the Vietnamese female players.

Besides Vietnam’s highlight, eight other moments were included in the list featuring remarkable achievements: North Korea ending China’s dominance in 2001, Australia’s first championship in 2010, Thailand’s historic milestone in 2014, Japan completing their trophy set the same year and defending the title in 2018, China’s strong comeback in 2022, South Korea reaching the final for the first time, and the progress of the Philippines also in 2022.

After more than a week of voting, the final results showed the Vietnam women's team leading with 24% of the total votes. The gap with the runner-up Australia was very narrow, as the host nation for the 2026 tournament received 23%, while Thailand ranked third with 11%. This demonstrates the strong appeal and support from fans for Vietnam’s historic journey.

Winning the vote is seen as a significant morale boost for the Vietnam women's team ahead of the 2026 Asian Cup. In the upcoming tournament, the team is placed in Group C alongside Japan, India, and Chinese Taipei, with their opening match against India scheduled for March 4th. With positive preparation and high spirits, the Vietnam women's team is expected to continue making new marks on the continental stage.
