Scott McTominay is excelling at Napoli, and should he depart from Italy, Manchester United is entitled to 10% of the transfer gain as per a clause embedded in the agreement.
After parting ways with Manchester United in 2024, the Scottish midfielder joined Napoli for a fee around £25.7 million and quickly became one of the most successful signings in the Southern Italian club's history.
Despite initial resistance from coach Erik ten Hag at the time of transfer, McTominay proved his worth with consistent performances and impressive goal-scoring ability from midfield.
In his debut Serie A season, he played a key role in helping Napoli win the title, scoring 13 goals in the league and earning the Player of the Season award. This season, he continues to perform at a high level with numerous goal contributions, significantly increasing his transfer value compared to when he left Old Trafford.
Notably, in the deal selling McTominay, Manchester United included a clause to receive 10% of any future profit if Napoli sells him again. This means if the Italian club secures a substantially higher fee, the Red Devils will share in the corresponding profit.
Currently valued at over £40 million, McTominay’s price could rise even further if Premier League or Saudi Arabian clubs enter the bidding.
If a major transfer occurs, MU could earn at least several million pounds without directly engaging in negotiations. This is viewed as a smart financial move amid Manchester’s ongoing squad restructuring.
However, the likelihood of McTominay leaving Napoli soon is low. His contract runs until 2028, and the Italian club is negotiating an extension to 2030, including a significant salary increase from his current weekly wage of about £90,000. His agent is reportedly holding talks with Napoli’s management to finalize details.
In response to rumors about his future, McTominay stated: “My agent hasn’t contacted anyone regarding my future.” He further emphasized: “I am very happy here and, for me, I am a Napoli player; that’s all I think about.”
Napoli currently sits third in Serie A with goals still to pursue. Nevertheless, should a surprising big offer emerge, Manchester United will certainly monitor closely, as every step McTominay takes in Italy could bring financial benefits to his former club.
