La Liga has officially initiated an inquiry following the emergence of a disturbing video in which Osasuna supporters are said to have shouted insulting comments aimed at Vinicius during their win against Real Madrid.
Vinicius scored a goal for Real Madrid at Osasuna’s stadium, yet it was not enough to prevent Los Blancos from suffering a defeat at El Sadar.
However, aside from the exciting action on the pitch, attention was also drawn to the stands. Specifically, a circulated video showed Osasuna fans chanting “Vinicius, f*ck off”.
The La Liga authorities confirmed they are investigating the footage and may impose sanctions if any violations are found.
Throughout the match, Vinicius was repeatedly booed by the crowd. After equalizing Ante Budimir’s opening goal in the first half, he celebrated by pointing to his name on the back of his shirt. Nevertheless, Osasuna secured a 2-1 victory thanks to Raul Garcia’s late goal in the final minutes.
Notably, these offensive chants occurred just days after Vinicius accused Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni of racial discrimination.
At that time, he immediately approached referee Francois Letexier after the Argentine player covered his mouth with his shirt while speaking. The referee then crossed his arms over his chest to signal the activation of UEFA’s anti-racism protocol.
Following the shocking images at Estadio da Luz, Vinicius posted a statement on Instagram. He wrote: “Racists are, first and foremost, cowards. They hide their mouths with their shirts to show how weak they are.
Yet they are protected by those who should be responsible for punishing them. What happened today is nothing new in my life or for the team.
I received a yellow card for celebrating a goal. I still don’t understand why. Meanwhile, the procedure carried out was ineffective and meaningless.
I don’t like being involved in situations like this, especially after a big win when the spotlight should be on Real Madrid, but it is necessary.”
UEFA has also opened an investigation and appointed an inspector to review the related allegations.
