Luis Diaz is excelling at Bayern Munich, yet outside the field, he faces difficulties with a particular matter that is directly mentioned in his agreement.
After winning the title with Liverpool in the Premier League during his first season under Arne Slot, Luis Diaz moved to the reigning Bundesliga champions for a fee of £65.5 million. He adapted quickly, scoring 19 goals and providing 15 assists in 33 matches this season. Overall, Diaz has contributed to 34 goals in 33 games for Bayern.
Despite his impressive form, Diaz could still be fined by Bayern for poor integration. Diaz’s native language is Spanish. He also learned Portuguese while playing for Porto and knows a bit of English from his time at Liverpool. However, the Colombian star does not speak any German.
In a recent interview with Sky Deportes, Diaz admitted that language remains the “hardest thing” in his adjustment process at Bayern. According to a report by BILD, Diaz’s contract with Bayern includes a “language clause,” which requires him to attend classes to improve his German.
This is described as an official obligation, clearly documented in the contract and must be followed. Under the agreement, Diaz is required to attend 2–3 language lessons per week. Moreover, if he does not show significant improvement, he could face financial penalties ranging from 5,000 to 50,000 euros depending on his compliance level.
Bayern does not have many Spanish-speaking players, but captain Joshua Kimmich—who also speaks French and English—is among the few and has quickly befriended Diaz.
“We have a few people who can speak a bit of Spanish,”the German international shared. “His English is also decent. So the whole team is managing somehow.”.
Despite the language barrier, Diaz is enjoying life at Bayern. The Bavarian club leads the Bundesliga by more than 8 points ahead of the Der Klassiker against second-placed Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park. Diaz himself is having one of the best seasons of his career.
Speaking to the official Bundesliga, Diaz revealed that he and his family are genuinely happy in their new environment.
“It’s wonderful,”Diaz said. “As I have shared before, I feel very comfortable here, having joined a fantastic team, a great club, and a large organization. They make me feel at home, like part of a family.
“I am very happy here. I try to enjoy it because football is about enjoying this phase. And my family is also very happy here.”
