Arsenal overcame Tottenham to widen the gap with Manchester City, yet the celebration was marred as Bukayo Saka exited the game following a serious clash.
Arsenal secured an important win against Tottenham, but the Gunners' happiness was somewhat overshadowed when their winger Bukayo Saka had to be substituted late in the match due to injury.
The England international suffered an incident after a heavy collision, when Spurs midfielder Xavi Simons fell on his ankle. Saka was immediately attended to by Arsenal's medical team before being replaced by Noni Madueke.
Nevertheless, Saka fully participated in the post-match celebrations with his teammates, suggesting the injury might not be severe. However, coach Mikel Arteta will surely hope his player avoids any significant damage during this crucial part of the season.
Saka is having another impressive season with Arsenal, scoring 8 goals and providing 7 assists across all competitions. Despite having some hamstring and hip issues earlier in the season, his consistent performance convinced the club to offer him a new contract, securing his stay at Emirates until 2031.
Speaking after the contract extension announcement, Arteta said: “Every player is very important. We are happy they feel a strong connection with the club, with what we are building and how they are treated. Bukayo has been with us since he was very young. His decision to stay and the club’s full support is extremely positive.”
Saka’s injury somewhat cast a shadow over an almost perfect day for Arsenal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Eberechi Eze opened the scoring in the first half before Randal Kolo Muani equalized for the home side.
In the second half, Viktor Gyokeres restored Arsenal’s lead, then Eze completed his brace and Gyokeres sealed the victory with a stoppage-time goal.
The full three points allowed Arsenal to increase their lead over Manchester City by 5 points in the Premier League title race. Arteta’s squad will return to action next Sunday when they host Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.
