After a fortunate win against Nottingham, coach Arne Slot openly admitted that Liverpool probably deserved only a draw.
Coach Arne Slot acknowledged that Liverpool faced significant challenges in their 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at City Ground. The Reds were often dominated, especially in the first half when Forest applied intense pressing and created numerous chances. The Dutch manager candidly mentioned the role of luck: “Scoring in the last minute always involves some luck… but today it was different. A draw would have been a fairer result.”
One reason for Liverpool’s unconvincing performance was the unexpected absence of Florian Wirtz before kickoff. However, Slot refused to use this as an excuse for the poor display: “I hope it’s not just that. We have missed many players throughout the season… The first half was tough because Forest played well and had very skilled players.”
Liverpool’s coach also explained the tactical adjustments made by swapping Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai. He said the team kept losing control in midfield and had to change: “We couldn’t hold possession even for a second. When we tried long passes, we lost the duels… We stabilized the game, and the second half was completely different.” Slot also acknowledged that luck favored Liverpool at the end when VAR did not disallow controversial goals.
In addition, the Dutch strategist praised young talent Rio Ngumoha, the 17-year-old who continued to get opportunities: “He is playing a very significant role for a 17-year-old. Tell me, is there any 17-year-old in the Premier League who has played as much as him?” Slot highlighted Ngumoha’s development as a bright spot amid the team’s personnel difficulties.
Regarding Florian Wirtz’s condition, Slot said there were no new updates but he was not overly worried: “He tried to warm up but couldn’t take the field… Fortunately, there is still a week before the next match.” This gives hope that the German midfielder will return soon to help Liverpool improve their upcoming performances.
