Vietnamese-Australian goalkeeper Lawrence Caruso is said to be on trial with Thể Công Viettel Football Club.
On February 19th, Caruso attracted attention on his personal page by sharing photos of his participation in the spring training session with Thể Công Viettel Club. This marks the return of Thể Công Viettel after the Lunar New Year break and is also the first time the goalkeeper born in 2004 has appeared in the colors of this historic club.
Lawrence Caruso stands 1.84 meters tall and plays as a goalkeeper. His father is Australian of Italian descent, and his mother is Vietnamese. According to the player, his mother was born and raised in Vietnam before moving to Australia more than two decades ago. Currently, Caruso’s Vietnamese citizenship paperwork is still facing difficulties due to an expired old passport and some lost documents.
During his career, Caruso was trained at Melbourne City FC before moving to Central Coast Mariners. He has made appearances in the A-League, becoming the first player of Vietnamese origin to compete in Australia’s top national league. Additionally, the goalkeeper has been called up to the Australia U20 team.
The trial at Thể Công Viettel is considered a significant step in Caruso’s journey to find professional playing opportunities in his motherland. If he performs well, he could become an important backup option for the goalkeeper position of the soldier team in the near future.
Currently, Thể Công Viettel Club has two overseas Vietnamese players active on the team, namely Kyle Colonna and Damian Vũ Thanh An.
