Playing impressively and leading on several occasions during the final, Indonesia’s futsal squad still fell short of the title, losing to Iran in a tense penalty shootout at the 2026 AFC Futsal Championship.
With the support of around 15,000 home fans, Indonesia started confidently but conceded an early goal in the 3rd minute when Tayebi scored for Iran. Unshaken, the hosts quickly regained control. In the 7th minute, Reza Gunawan equalized 1-1, before Israr shone with back-to-back goals in the 8th and 9th minutes, putting Indonesia ahead 3-1.
Towards the end of the first half, Iran reduced the deficit from an indirect free kick just outside the penalty area. Karimi’s low shot slipped through the wall, ending the half with Indonesia leading 3-2.
In the second half, reigning champions Iran intensified their pressure. At the 24th minute, Ahmad Abbasi scored to level the score at 3-3. However, moments later, Samuel Eko capitalized on an opponent’s mistake to score precisely, restoring Indonesia’s lead at 4-3. Iran pushed forward and employed a power-play strategy late in the match. At the 38th minute, Kerimi scored to tie the game 4-4, forcing extra time.
In the second extra time period, Israr continued to impress with a skillful backheel finish from a free kick, putting Indonesia ahead 5-4 at the 48th minute. Nevertheless, Iran showed resilience as Salar chest-controlled the ball and scored accurately to equalize 5-5 during the power-play. The extra periods ended without further goals, leading the final to be decided by a penalty shootout.
In the penalty shootout, although goalkeeper Nisar saved Iran’s first attempt, Indonesia failed to capitalize as two players missed their shots. Ultimately, Iran won 5-4 on penalties, officially claiming the 2026 AFC Futsal Championship title.
Despite missing out on the top honor, Indonesia’s futsal team deserves praise for their brave and emotional performance throughout the tournament. Meanwhile, Iran’s victory over the host marks their 14th championship in 18 editions, cementing their status as Asia’s futsal powerhouse.
