Coach Michael Carrick candidly highlighted Manchester United's shortcomings following the draw against West Ham, and also commended the team's determination and character in holding onto a top 4 spot.
In the early hours of February 11, MU failed to secure a win for the first time under Carrick’s management, drawing 1-1 with West Ham. Nevertheless, a stoppage-time equalizer extended the “Red Devils” unbeaten run to five matches and allowed them to remain in 4th place on the Premier League table.
After the match, Carrick frankly admitted: “We are okay, but clearly a bit disappointed not to perform at our best. There are moments when you have to find ways to push through and move forward. I’m a little frustrated about that. This was a tough venue and we lacked the sharpness to find a solution. However, the team spirit was very good. We accepted one point and keep going.”
Benjamin Sesko’s late equalizer was the biggest highlight for MU. Carrick praised his player generously: “A fantastic finish. He did it again. That was a crucial moment, a big goal and a very positive step. I’m really happy for him.”
The English coach acknowledged the team’s lack of attacking sharpness: “This was a tough match as we expected. We weren’t quick or sharp enough going forward, so sometimes you have to make the most of what the game offers. Credit to the players for rising up once more. You can’t win every game, and we certainly didn’t want to leave empty-handed.”
Mentioning West Ham, the club he spent many years with as a player, Carrick expressed special feelings: “I really hope they avoid relegation. This club holds an important place in my life with many great memories. West Ham defended well, closing the gaps. We lacked a bit of spark. I won’t be too harsh on the players. The whole team will learn from this and come back stronger.”
Although the winning streak ended, Carrick remained optimistic as MU showed character in adversity, continuing to hold their position in the race for the Premier League’s top spots.
