A London-based football club is reportedly considering appointing Michael Carrick as head coach if the former midfielder is not officially given the permanent role at Man Utd this summer.
Crystal Palace is currently evaluating alternatives to Oliver Glasner, who recently confirmed he will step down as manager after the 2025/26 season concludes.
According to Football Insider, Michael Carrick has emerged as the top target for the Selhurst Park leadership, following the positive impact he made at Old Trafford. Since taking over Man Utd from Ruben Amorim in January 2026, Carrick has made an impressive return to the Red Devils’ coaching staff.
The 44-year-old tactician led Man Utd to four consecutive wins, including notable victories against Man City and Arsenal. Carrick’s ability to stabilize the team and restore a winning identity has quickly earned recognition from experts.
Speaking to Football Insider, journalist Pete O’Rourke stated Carrick’s reputation is growing: “Clearly, he is building a very convincing case for his interim coaching stint to be converted into a permanent position. If Michael Carrick is willing to take the job, he’s demonstrating he knows how to win in the Premier League. Should he bring Man Utd back into the Champions League, Carrick will definitely become a highly sought-after name in the coaching market.”
Despite Carrick’s impressive start at Old Trafford in an interim role, Man Utd’s leadership, led by INEOS, has yet to make a long-term appointment decision. The club prefers to follow proper procedures rather than rush into a choice.
Although Carrick is a strong candidate, Man Utd continues to monitor other quality options, including Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner. Roberto De Zerbi is also mentioned as a contender for the Old Trafford hot seat.
With Glasner set to leave Crystal Palace at season’s end and the club seeking a new tactical direction, Carrick’s experience handling high-pressure environments makes him an attractive option in Chairman Steve Parish’s eyes.
If Man Utd decides not to entrust Carrick with the role this summer, Crystal Palace appears ready to step in. For now, Carrick remains focused on the goal of reaching the top 4 with the Red Devils, but his future could very well be tied to South London if the door at Old Trafford closes.
