Indonesian media bitterly voice their disappointment after missing out on the Asian championship

Indonesia's media, including CNN Indonesia, expressed regret following their defeat to Iran in the AFC Futsal 2026 final, while still praising the team's courageous spirit and performance.

Indonesian media collectively expressed their sorrow after the national futsal team lost to Iran in the AFC Futsal 2026 final. Although they could not claim the championship, the brave display by Indonesian Futsal received widespread acclaim, especially from major outlets like CNN Indonesia.

According to CNN Indonesia, the penalty shootout loss to Iran at Indonesia Arena on the evening of February 7 was a harsh ending for Indonesia. Playing on home ground and holding a clear advantage at times, Indonesia came very close to their first-ever Asian title. However, Iran’s composure and experience proved decisive at the crucial moment.

CNN Indonesia highlighted that Iran continues to demonstrate why they are a powerhouse in Asian futsal. Despite Indonesia taking the lead multiple times during the match, Iran remained calm and persistent in chasing the score. Mehdi Karimi’s power-play goal at the 37th minute to equalize at 4-4 marked a major turning point that completely changed the final’s dynamics.

Moreover, Indonesian media also showered praise on the fighting spirit of the home players. CNN Indonesia particularly lauded Israr Megantara for his hat-trick in the final, alongside the outstanding performance of goalkeeper Ahmad Habiebie, who made several crucial saves and successfully stopped penalties during regular time.

Nevertheless, the penalty shootout proved too great a challenge for Indonesia. Missed shots by Israr Megantara and Dewa Rizki led to Indonesia’s downfall against the more experienced opponent. CNN Indonesia described this defeat as a “valuable but necessary lesson” for a team on the rise.

Ending the tournament as runner-up, Indonesian media affirmed this as a historic milestone for the country’s futsal. CNN Indonesia stated that with continued investment and stability, Indonesian Futsal could realistically aim for the Asian championship in the near future.
