Indonesia's courageous display versus Iran in the 2026 Asian Futsal final impressed Vietnamese fans, who lauded the Southeast Asian representative's determination and class.
On the evening of February 7 (Vietnam time), the AFC Futsal Asian Cup 2026 final between Indonesia and Iran concluded with disappointment for the hosts, but sparked strong admiration from Vietnamese fans for the valiant effort of the Southeast Asian side.
Fueled by passionate support from the stands, Indonesia started confidently but faced an early setback in the 3rd minute when Hossein Tayebibigoli scored from a surprise free kick for Iran. Nevertheless, the hosts remained unfazed. Reza Gunawan equalized at the 7th minute, followed by Israr Megantara’s brilliant double goals, putting Indonesia ahead 3-1 within just 9 minutes of play.
Iran showed the strength expected of an Asian futsal powerhouse by mounting a fierce comeback. Madhi Karimi reduced the deficit to 2-3 near the end of the first half, then Ahmad Abbasi and Karimi scored again in the second half to level the match at 4-4. Samuel Eko had briefly put Indonesia up 4-3, and Israr Megantara completed his brace to make it 5-4 in extra time, but Iran quickly equalized 5-5 with a goal from Salar just seconds later.
The nerve-wracking penalty shootout ended Indonesia’s dream of the championship, as Iran calmly secured a 5-4 victory after six shots each. Despite the loss, the host’s performance earned widespread admiration from the regional football community, especially Vietnamese fans.
On forums and social media, many Vietnamese supporters expressed their admiration. One user commented: “Indonesia played brilliantly, gave me goosebumps. Losing on penalties but their spirit and style deserved the title.”
Another wrote: “Southeast Asian futsal is clearly progressing. Indonesia made Iran sweat today.”
Several opinions took a broader view: “Watching Indonesia almost win Asia is both inspiring and respectful. Hope Vietnamese futsal will soon reach a final like this.”
Though they couldn’t claim the continental crown, Indonesia left the tournament to applause and respect from the region, proving the significant progress of Southeast Asian futsal on the Asian map.
