Malaysian newspaper surprisingly 'examines' the ages of 5 naturalized Vietnamese players, all over 30

Malaysian media closely monitors the possibility of Vietnam's national team adding naturalized players before the decisive match, paying special attention to a seemingly minor detail that sparked much discussion.

Ahead of the crucial Group F Asian Cup qualifier between Vietnam and Malaysia on March 31, Malaysian media has shown significant interest in Vietnam's potential use of naturalized players. According to Stadium Astro, this is considered a key variable that could directly affect the outcome of the match, as both teams fiercely compete for the top spot in the group.

One detail highlighted by the Malaysian press is the age of the naturalized players Vietnam might use. All five names are over 30 years old, ranging between 31 and 33 years old. This perspective offers an observational insight into the squad structure, showing how the opposing media scrutinizes seemingly minor factors before such a decisive match.

Specifically, the five players mentioned by Malaysian media are Gustavo Sant’Ana (31 years old), Hendrio Araujo (31), Patrik Lê Giang (33), Janclesio Almeida (32), and Geovane Magno (31). All have played for many years in the V-League, are familiar with Vietnamese football, and can quickly integrate if registered to play.

Among them, three players have completed the Vietnamese naturalization process including defender Gustavo Sant’Ana (now named Đỗ Phi Long), midfielder Hendrio (Đỗ Hoàng Hên), and goalkeeper Patrik Lê Giang. These players are legally eligible for coach Kim Sang Sik to consider using immediately, provided they meet professional and physical requirements.

The remaining two, Geovane Magno and Janclesio Almeida, are still in the process of completing naturalization procedures, despite support offered since late 2025. The fact that Malaysian media continues to monitor both players indicates that the opponent does not rule out any personnel scenarios Vietnam might deploy.

Overall, Malaysian media's close tracking of Vietnam's naturalization situation reflects caution toward a direct rival competing for the top group position. Although it is unclear which players Vietnam can fully utilize, Malaysia’s preparation shows they consider this a factor that could influence the outcome of the decisive match.
