Iran’s futsal squad overcame Iraq 4-2 to secure their sixth straight appearance in the final, reinforcing their dominant position in the Asian Futsal Championship.
A 4-2 victory over Iraq in the 2026 Asian Futsal Championship semifinals once again confirmed Iran’s unrivaled supremacy in the continent’s premier futsal competition. With this result, the West Asian representative has made it to the final for the sixth consecutive time, extending a dominance spanning over a decade and continuing to set historic milestones in Asian futsal that are hard to surpass.
The match between Iran and Iraq unfolded with more drama than expected. Despite being considered the underdog, Iraq started confidently and surprised by taking the lead twice in the first half. These early goals not only demonstrated Iraq’s commendable fighting spirit but also reflected the significant progress the team has made in this tournament. However, against a seasoned and experienced opponent like Iran, that advantage was insufficient.
The difference in class was clearly displayed by Iran right from the first half. Although they repeatedly found themselves chasing the score, Iran’s players remained composed. They quickly equalized at 1-1 and then 2-2 with smooth coordinated plays, demonstrating their game control and diverse attacking capabilities, hallmarks that have defined Iranian futsal for many years.
In the second half, Iran completely dominated the game. The West Asian team increased the pace, applied relentless pressure, and forced Iraq to retreat into a defensive stance. Under constant pressure, Iraq’s defense began to show gaps, allowing Iran to score two crucial goals and seal a 4-2 victory. This outcome accurately reflected the match’s dynamics, with Iran proving their ability to “finish off” opponents at critical moments.
This achievement further highlights Iran’s historic dominance in the Asian Futsal Championship. Since the tournament’s inception in 1999, Iran has appeared in 16 of 18 finals, achieving nearly a 90% participation rate. Notably, the streak of six consecutive finals from 2014 to the present clearly demonstrates the stability and depth of Iran’s futsal squad, unmatched by any other Asian team.
Not only holding the record for most final appearances, Iran also boasts an impressive 13 titles from 16 finals, corresponding to a winning rate exceeding 80%. Currently, the Iran futsal team stands on the brink of further expanding their trophy collection as they await their opponent in the 2026 Asian Futsal Championship final – the winner of the other semifinal between Japan and Indonesia. Regardless of the opponent, Iran enters the final as the true “king” of Asian futsal, aiming not only for victory but also to reaffirm their long-standing dominance spanning multiple generations.
