Atletico Madrid is reportedly seriously contemplating replacing head coach Diego Simeone after nearly 15 years with the club. According to Diario Sport, internal tensions regarding transfer policies have put the Argentine coach’s position at risk. Differences in team-building approaches have led the leadership to consider a comprehensive “rebuild.”

The root of the issue began with a fractured relationship between Simeone and the new sporting director Mateu Alemany, who has been in the role for less than four months. Both parties have revealed conflicting visions during the winter transfer window, ranging from personnel priorities and target profiles to short-term strategies. The public exposure of these disputes has only intensified the backstage tension.

Alemany previously served as Barcelona’s sporting director from 2021 to 2023 before leaving after Deco was given authority over strategic planning. His experience in squad restructuring was expected to bring fresh energy to Atletico, but clashes with Simeone are making the process of change difficult and delicate.

Andoni Iraola from Bournemouth has emerged as a potential candidate due to his progressive football style and ability to build a modern squad.
