OFFICIAL: Vietnam U23 Midfielder to Return by the End of 2026

Midfielder Nguyễn Thái Sơn has successfully completed ACL reconstruction surgery and is currently in rehabilitation, targeting a comeback on the pitch by late 2026.

Ninh Bình Club recently issued an official statement providing an update on the injury status of midfielder Nguyễn Thái Sơn, following the unfortunate incident during the match against CAHN Club. According to the ancient capital Hoa Lư team, the 2003-born player underwent successful knee ACL reconstruction surgery and has entered a long-term recovery period.

Previously, on the evening of February 1 at Hàng Đẫy Stadium, CAHN and Ninh Bình delivered an exciting match ending 3-2 in favor of the home team. The clash was not only a battle for the top spot but also attracted great attention due to the participation of several national team players. However, the lively atmosphere was overshadowed by the serious injury of Nguyễn Thái Sơn.

In this match, Thái Sơn was brought on by Coach Gerard Albadalejo at the start of the second half, marking his official debut for Ninh Bình after leaving Đông Á Thanh Hóa. Although he played only about 20 minutes, the Vietnam U23 midfielder made a positive impact in midfield. Unfortunately, after a non-contact moment, Thái Sơn suddenly fell to the ground, clutching his knee in pain and had to be stretchered off.

Ninh Bình Club announced: “Midfielder Nguyễn Thái Sơn has undergone successful ACL reconstruction surgery and is now in the recovery phase, with the goal of returning to the field around the end of 2026.” The club added: “Midfielder Nguyễn Thái Sơn had knee ACL reconstruction surgery in Ho Chi Minh City. The operation was successful, and Thái Sơn’s health is currently stable.”

Post-surgery, Thái Sơn’s recovery plan has been specifically outlined by the club. “Starting next week, Thái Sơn is expected to return to Ninh Bình and begin rehabilitation according to the club’s professional protocol. Ninh Bình FC will provide the best medical care, physical therapy, and psychological support to help Thái Sơn regain his form as soon as possible.” The recovery process is planned to be lengthy and requires patience.

The Hoa Lư club also confirmed the estimated timeline for Thái Sơn’s return to competition: “According to the plan, Thái Sơn could resume training and playing by the end of 2026.” The long-term absence of the 2003-born midfielder is considered a major blow to Ninh Bình Club, especially as he was seen as a key figure in their youth development strategy. Moreover, this injury significantly impacts the Vietnam national team’s personnel options, as Thái Sơn is regarded as one of the most promising young midfielders under coach Kim Sang Sik.
