The failure to start the final group stage matches simultaneously caused UEFA to impose severe penalties on Real Madrid and Benfica.
UEFA’s disciplinary body has just issued strict rulings regarding the match between Real Madrid and SL Benfica during the Champions League group stage held at the end of January.
According to the tournament’s strict rules, all matches in the last round must begin simultaneously at 21:00 to ensure fairness and transparency. However, the showdown at Estádio da Luz could not start as scheduled due to delays from both clubs.
UEFA determined that Real Madrid’s late arrival directly caused the postponed kickoff, an action considered a serious breach of the unified competition discipline.
As a result, both Real Madrid and Benfica were fined 40,000 euros each. Beyond the financial penalty, UEFA specifically held the head coaches, Alvaro Arbeloa of Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho of Benfica, primarily responsible for the delay.
Both renowned coaches received official warnings and will face harsher disciplinary measures if similar incidents occur again. Additionally, Real Madrid was criticized for unsportsmanlike conduct related to the numerous yellow cards their players received during the tense match in Lisbon.
This administrative sanction coincides with another setback for the Spanish royal club regarding personnel. Forward Rodrygo has been officially banned by UEFA for two matches after receiving a direct red card for insulting referee Davide Massa.
The inappropriate remarks by the Brazilian star toward the Italian referee have cost him dearly, significantly weakening Real Madrid’s attacking options during a crucial upcoming period. This is seen as a major blow to Arbeloa’s ambitions, as the team is already struggling with results.
The 2-4 defeat to Benfica not only caused Real Madrid to lose their top 8 position but also forced them into a risky playoff round to fight for a spot in the round of 16. A twist of fate has drawn Real Madrid to face Benfica again in the upcoming two-legged playoff.
The consecutive penalties and Rodrygo’s absence will undoubtedly place tremendous psychological pressure on the Real Madrid players as they face Jose Mourinho’s team again. The Spanish side must now tighten discipline and improve performance if they want to continue their journey in Europe’s most prestigious competition.
