With Thailand and Vietnam knocked out in the quarterfinals, Indonesia stands as the only Southeast Asian team advancing to the Asian Futsal Championship semifinals.
The 2026 Asian Futsal Championship features four Southeast Asian teams: Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. After the group stage, the Southeast Asian teams made a strong impression, with only Malaysia being eliminated and the other three securing three of the eight quarterfinal spots.
Although they seemed capable of progressing further in the tournament, after the quarterfinals only the host nation Indonesia advanced to the 2026 Asian Futsal Championship semifinals. Thailand, the defending runners-up, shocked everyone by being eliminated in an unbelievable manner. Despite being heavily favored, Thailand lost heavily to Iraq with a score of 2-4.
The Thai futsal team surprised everyone by losing 2-4 to Iraq in the 2026 Asian Futsal Championship quarterfinals. Notably, Thailand was highly ranked—8th in the world, 2nd in Asia, and the defending runner-up—but they were defeated by Iraq, ranked 49th globally.
Meanwhile, the Vietnamese futsal team ended their journey at the 2026 Asian Futsal Championship after a 2-3 loss to host Indonesia in the quarterfinals on the evening of February 3rd. Despite fighting hard and creating many opportunities, coach Diego Giustozzi’s squad could not overturn the game against a rising regional futsal power.
Although they could not advance further, the Vietnamese futsal team’s performance at the tournament still showed many positive signsespecially in terms of their fighting spirit and the development of young players on the continental stage.
Thus, Indonesia remains the only Southeast Asian team in the 2026 Asian Futsal Championship semifinals, where they will face a very strong opponent, Japan. Reaching the Asian semifinals marks Indonesia’s best achievement in futsal history. The other semifinal match will be a Gulf region showdown between Iran and Iraq.
