Coach Kim Sang-sik is making a distinctive impression during his tenure with Vietnam's national teams by staying undefeated across every tournament in the Southeast Asian region.
Specifically, after three major tournaments including the ASEAN Championship 2024, the U23 Southeast Asia Championship, and the 33rd SEA Games,Coach Kim Sang-sik and Vietnam's teams have played a total of 16 matches with a record of 15 wins and 1 draw. Notably, the teams under his guidance have consistently shown stable gameplay, resilience at crucial moments, and excellent ability to capitalize on opportunities.
At the ASEAN Championship 2024,Vietnam started the campaign with a convincing 4-1 victory over Laos, followed by a narrow 1-0 win against Indonesia. Although they were held to a 1-1 draw by the Philippines in the group stage, the "Golden Star Warriors" quickly regained form with a dominant 5-0 win against Myanmar. In the knockout rounds, Vietnam defeated Singapore twice in the semifinals, then overcame Thailand in the final with an aggregate score of 5-3 over two legs, securing the championship in a commanding fashion.
Not stopping there, Coach Kim Sang-sik continued to prove his affinity for youth tournaments by leading the Vietnam U23 team to win the U23 Southeast Asia Championship.The red-shirted team successively defeated Laos, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Indonesia, claiming their third consecutive title in this competition. This achievement further solidifies the position of Vietnam U23 in the region and highlights the clear tactical imprint of the Korean coach.
At the 33rd SEA Games,the Vietnam U22 team embarked on an emotional journey. They advanced through the group stage with important wins over Laos and Malaysia, then defeated the Philippines in the semifinals. In the final against Thailand, despite falling behind, Vietnam U22 showed great determination to equalize and eventually won 3-2 in extra time, earning the prestigious gold medal. This victory is considered the clearest demonstration of Coach Kim Sang-sik’s resilience and good fortune in high-stakes matches.
Besides regional competitions, under Coach Kim Sang-sik, Vietnam also competed in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers with notable results. Despite a heavy loss to Malaysia, this outcome is likely to be overturned if the AFC awards a 0-3 forfeit against Malaysia. Additionally, the team secured convincing victories over Laos.
