Manchester United scored the winner in stoppage time for the eighth time in the Europa League against Rangers after 92 minutes, overtaking Arsenal and Chelsea to become the Premier League's champions of European turnarounds. Ruben Amorim also became the third Red Devils manager to win his first three European games in charge, after Sir Matt Busby in 1956 and Fernando Ferguson in 1990. But there was bad news for United, with Amorim confirming that both Lenny Yoro and De Ligt had suffered injuries that forced them to be substituted early in the game.
Of the three centre-backs Amorim selected, two were eventually replaced. De Ligt was replaced by Harry Maguire at half-time, while Yoro played just 10 minutes longer and was replaced by Terrell Malacia, with Diogu Darlow making a cameo appearance at centre-back.
Amorim said he did not want to risk prolonging their time on the pitch to avoid the injury getting worse. "De Ligt felt that there was something wrong with his legs, and so did Yoro." Amorim explained after the game: "We can't take any risks, although I know we have to win this game, but we have to protect the players and everyone is important.
Amorim may not have enough centre-backs to play in the three-centre-back if De Ligt and Yoro are unavailable for the upcoming game, with Victor Lindelof just back in training and Evans still recovering from injury, in which case one of Darlow and Mazraoui may need to play at centre-back alongside Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez. This game MazraouiHe was left out of the matchday squad after suffering a knock in the home defeat to Brighton and did not play.
Manchester United's next two games will be away from home, against Fulham in the Premier League and at Romania's Bucharest Star in the final round of the Europa League. Amorim added: "We have a lot of different players to play in, but we can't afford to lose anybody. Everyone has to be prepared. I need to show confidence and not let the players play for a long time, we have other players who can play."
It was an absolutely frustrating night for De Ligt and Yoro, with a first-half header disallowed on the grounds that Yoro was deemed to have brought down Propel for a foul. Amorim commented: "We scored a goal in the first half and that was important. We take set-pieces very seriously and from the first game you can see that we can use that in European competition and if in the Premier League De Ligt's goal doesn't get blown away.'
The biggest concern for Manchester United fans is the 19-year-old Yoro, who has been with Manchester United for half a season, this is the second time he has been injured, and fans fear that he will become a new generation of "glass man". Old Trafford fans have come across quite a few of those players, Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial, Phil Jones and Mason Mount and don't want another one.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, who scored the winning goal, summed it up: "I know what it means to win the game. You really want to win the game. We were a bit disappointed because we got off to a good start to the new year, playing two good games against Liverpool and Arsenal, winning against Southampton and losing to Brighton. We want to be in the final of the Europa League and we want to go straight to the quarter-finals so we don't have to play two more play-offs.'
B Fee said that he did not want fans to get used to losing. "It's not about character. We have to show that in 90 minutes, when we concede a goal, we can't give up. We conceded at the end and we had to score at the end. At this club, you need to win every game. You know, if you can't win here, it's going to be difficult. I hope our fans never get used to losing games and I hope they believe that the team can win games."
Manchester United's next game is against Fulham on Sunday, and Amorim said: "We need to focus on every game, the goal is to win every game, our goal is to win. We'll have to see. There's a lot to improve and although this one was won, we now have to win the next game.」
