The goalkeeper's unsportsmanlike conduct in the final moments caused the Viettel team to drop their lead and accept a draw with HAGL.
On the afternoon of December 24 in Thai Nguyen, the intense and dramatic second round clash between HAGL and Viettel Military took place. Following an impressive opening performance, HAGL started the match with high confidence, while the Viettel Military team showed clear determination to test the strength of their motivated opponents.
Viettel Military made the breakthrough first. In the 26th minute, from a well-organized corner kick, Danh Trung positioned himself perfectly and rose high to head the ball into HAGL’s net. This goal allowed the military team to control the game effectively, playing tightly and deliberately slowing the pace to protect their narrow lead.
Trailing, HAGL was forced to push forward, accelerate on both wings, and continuously apply pressure. However, Viettel Military’s defense maintained proper spacing and tight coverage, causing HAGL’s attacking moves to often end in dead ends or inaccurate long-range shots.
Just when the match seemed settled, a turning point came late in the game. In the 85th minute, during a contest after securing the ball, goalkeeper Văn Phong struck Thanh Sơn from HAGL in the face. The referee immediately intervened, showed a yellow card, and awarded a penalty kick to HAGL.
From the penalty spot, HAGL took advantage of the precious chance to level the score. The equalizer at 1-1 allowed them to secure a point as there was insufficient time left for either side to make a difference. Viettel Military clearly regretted losing their advantage due to an individual mistake.
This draw gives HAGL 4 points after two rounds, allowing them to temporarily lead the standings. In the final round, coach Quang Trãi’s team will face PVF CAND in a match that will be decisive for their championship ambitions in this highly competitive friendly tournament.
