Alexander Isak speaks out after a serious injury

Alexander Isak sustained a serious broken leg in the match where Liverpool defeated Tottenham 2-1, resulting in a lengthy recovery period, yet he sent an emotional message of gratitude to supporters.

The joy of scoring was short-lived as Liverpool striker Alexander Isak had to leave the field in pain due to a serious injury in the recent 2-1 win over Tottenham.

Early in the second half, Isak opened the scoring for “The Reds” with a decisive shot. However, immediately after scoring, he was challenged from behind by Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven, causing a fracture to his ankle and fibula. The Swedish forward had to be substituted immediately and was diagnosed with the need for emergency surgery.

According to medical staff confirmation, Isak underwent surgery on Monday (22-12) to stabilize the bone. Having transferred from Newcastle for £125 million in the summer, Isak had scored only two Premier League goals for Liverpool and now faces at least two months out of action.

On social media, the 26-year-old striker posted an emotional message to fans: “It’s heartbreaking to be away from the pitch for a while. I will focus on recovery and work hard to come back as soon as possible. Thank you to Liverpool fans and everyone for your encouraging words—I appreciate them all.”

Injury expert Ben Dinnery believes Isak’s recovery could take longer than expected due to the complexity of the fracture and its impact on the ankle.

“Typically, a fibula fracture requires 6–8 weeks to heal, but surgery can extend the recovery time. Isak will need a cautious return to play and may only feature towards the end of the season,” Dinnery commented.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed frustration over the challenge that caused the injury: “That was a reckless tackle. If done 10 times, all 10 times could cause serious injury to the opponent,” he said.

On Tottenham’s side, coach Thomas Frank defended his player Van de Ven, stating it was an instinctive defensive action trying to prevent a goal: “He was just attempting a sliding tackle. Unfortunately, Isak’s leg was exactly where the contact happened. Both players spoke and made peace, which shows good sportsmanship,” Frank explained.

Liverpool now faces personnel challenges as Isak joins Bruno Fernandes and other key players on the injury list. Nevertheless, the Merseyside club remains hopeful that the Swedish striker will return before the season ends.
