MU’s limited success of only two wins in eight recent matches clearly indicates a problem that Ruben Amorim and the club’s leadership must urgently solve during the upcoming winter transfer window: overhauling the midfield with fresh recruits.
1. The irritation among MU supporters regarding Amorim’s squad’s form is quite understandable. They had a strong run with three straight wins over Sunderland, Liverpool, and Brighton in October. However, over the last two months and eight games, Amorim’s side secured just two victories and repeatedly missed opportunities to enter the Top 4. Most recently, MU’s loss to Aston Villa left them in 7th place, trailing 4th-placed Chelsea by three points.
Looking at the bigger picture, Amorim’s MU has made some progress but still has unresolved problems. The most prominent is the midfield’s frailty. Other areas of MU’s squad have alternatives when players are injured or away on national duty. But the central midfield reveals a glaring lack of depth. Casemiro, now 33, continues to play game after game despite being unable to last the full 90 minutes. Simply put, Amorim has no suitable backup for the Brazilian midfielder. Manuel Ugarte, expected to replace Casemiro, has become increasingly disappointing, with many fans wishing the Uruguayan would leave Old Trafford as soon as possible. The former PSG player’s performances have been poor. While MU’s attack still shows some growth, the team’s failure to secure good results clearly ties to the midfield’s decline. This has undermined the whole team’s efforts, causing MU to lose points repeatedly.
Reflecting on the Aston Villa loss, it must be said objectively that MU’s gameplay was not bad and had a clear plan. However, as noted earlier, the midfield’s disarray ruined everything, and Amorim certainly cannot overlook this issue.
MU needs to reinforce their squad in this winter transfer window, with the top priority being a new midfielder.
2. With so many MU players injured and three others—Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, and Noussair Mazraoui—called up for AFCON 2025 duties, the question arises: will MU make signings in the upcoming winter transfer window? Amorim remains firm, expressing trust in the current squad and no intention to urge MU’s leadership to bring in new players.
The Portuguese coach is partly right regarding the defense and attack positions. While MU is experiencing personnel changes in these areas, he can still find suitable alternatives. Lisandro Martinez has returned and is likely to strengthen a defense that includes many inexperienced players. The attack still has options to cover for the absence of Mbeumo. Losing players to AFCON duty was anticipated, and many Premier League teams face similar challenges.
Personally, I believe MU must consider signing additional midfielders, as this area causes the greatest concern. Considering Bruno Fernandes’s injury, Casemiro’s aging signs, and the decline or inconsistent quality of other midfielders, this could hinder Amorim’s team from securing a Champions League spot. Finding the right midfielder won’t be easy, as promising players like Brighton’s Carlos Baleba or Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson come with exorbitant price tags. However, if MU continues with their current fragile midfield, their performance will only worsen.
