Liverpool faces a double blow due to Alexander Isak

Alexander Isak’s injury is regarded as a serious loss for Liverpool, with a high chance he will be out for an extended time, leading to considerable effects on the team’s strength.

Alexander Isak, Liverpool’s record signing for £125 million from Newcastle during the summer, scored the team’s third goal in the 2-1 victory over Tottenham last weekend.

After a somewhat difficult start at Anfield, the Swedish striker surely hoped that his opening goal against a nine-man Tottenham would be a boost to his Liverpool career. However, that joy was quickly cut short when Isak suffered a serious injury following a collision with Micky Van de Ven inside the penalty area. Substituted on at the start of the second half, he played only a few minutes before having to leave the pitch, making way for Jeremie Frimpong.

Initial signs are not promising. According to reliable sources like David Ornstein and Sky Sports, medical examinations are likely to confirm that Isak has a broken leg. If this scenario occurs, the former Real Sociedad forward may be out for about three months, delivering a heavy blow to Liverpool amid Mohamed Salah’s participation in the Africa Cup of Nations and uncertainty over his future at the club.

Beyond the sporting loss, Liverpool will also face significant financial damage. With a weekly wage of £300,000, Isak’s estimated 12.9-week absence means the club will lose nearly £3.87 million.

In the 2025/26 season, Isak has appeared in 16 matches across all competitions. The 1999-born striker joined Liverpool without a full preseason, having previously sought to push for a move away from Newcastle.

Recently, Liverpool confirmed that Isak underwent ankle surgery, including treatment for a fibula fracture. The club’s statement said the striker suffered the injury and is now in recovery at the AXA training center, though no specific return date has been set.

Previously, Isak missed five games due to a groin injury between October and November. However, this time the absence could be longer if scans reveal a more severe condition.

During Isak’s recovery, Liverpool will face a congested schedule. They are level on points with Chelsea, who are fourth, after their win at Tottenham. Liverpool’s next three matches are against Wolves, Leeds, and Fulham, before traveling to face league leaders Arsenal in early 2026.

Coach Arne Slot’s team will also host Barnsley in the FA Cup third round, then face Burnley. Isak will be absent in Champions League ties against Marseille and Qarabag, with a trip to Bournemouth in between.

Additionally, the Swedish forward will miss the home clash with his former club Newcastle, as well as matches against Man City and two consecutive away games at Sunderland and Nottingham Forest. If recovery goes well, Isak might return in the mid-March rematch against Tottenham at Anfield.
