Surprise announcement on the AFF Cup 2026 draw timing, challenges await the Vietnam national team

The Southeast Asian Football Federation (AFF) has announced that the official draw for the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 15, 2026, in Jakarta (Indonesia).

The Southeast Asian Championship, the region’s most prestigious tournament for national teams and now renamed the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 due to a new title sponsorship, will mark its 30th anniversary next year, featuring 11 national teams competing for the Southeast Asian Championship title from July 24 to August 26, 2026.

The 2024 edition of the tournament ended with Vietnam crowned as Southeast Asian champions after a 5-3 aggregate win over Thailand in the final, setting a record of more than 541 million viewers across television and digital streaming platforms. Additionally, social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and X registered nearly 13 billion views for videos related to the event.

At the official Hyundai Cup 2026 draw, the teams from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam will be drawn into two groups for the group stage.

The teams from Brunei Darussalam and Timor Leste will compete in a qualifying playoff to claim the 10th spot in the tournament and will also be drawn to determine the home team for each home and away leg.

The official Hyundai Cup 2026 draw will be broadcast live, with the list of broadcasting stations to be announced in the near future.
