The slim 1-0 win against Everton in matchday 17 helped Arsenal reclaim first place in the Premier League with 39 points. Yet, manager Mikel Arteta quickly sent a cautionary message to his squad.
Against an Everton side severely lacking personnel, it is surprising that Arsenal only managed a minimal win.Despite dominating fully at Hill Dickinson Stadium with 65% possession and an expected goals (xG) of 1.81, Arsenal scored just one goal thanks to a penalty by new signing Viktor Gyökeres in the 27th minute.
The forwards’ misfortune, highlighted by two shots hitting the woodwork from Trossard and Zubimendi in the second half, prevented Arsenal from relaxing. They had to work hard to contain Everton’s determination and intensity.
After the game, Arsenal’s coach Mikel Arteta admitted his team did not perform as expected against Everton: "Of course, I’m very happy to get the win here. This is a really tough place to play. Everton were very well organized even with their injuries. By the way, I want to say they have built a stunning stadium. I was truly amazed by its beauty, congratulations to Everton."
However, the Spanish tactician quickly shifted focus to attacking efficiency. Once again, Arteta emphasized that failing to "kill off" the opponent early is an unnecessary risk in the Premier League: "In the first half, we had periods of very good control but didn’t create many clear chances, yet the Gunners still scored.
In the second half, we had three golden opportunities in open play. If you want the match to end more comfortably, you must take those chances in the Premier League. These are moments where you need to be sharper to build a safe lead rather than staying tense for a long time afterwards."
By restoring a 2-point gap over Manchester City, Arsenal still control their own destiny. To be able to win the Premier League after years of waiting, Arteta will have to remind his players to improve.
