Gyokeres scores, Arsenal returns to the top of the Premier League table

The sole goal by newcomer Viktor Gyokeres enabled Arsenal to beat Everton 1-0, reclaiming the lead in the 2025/26 Premier League after the 17th round.

This vital victory was significant not just for the points gained but also eased the heavy pressure on the "Gunners" after Manchester City had taken the lead earlier that day.

Heading to Everton’s stadium needing a win, Arsenal began the match with considerable tension. The early minutes were intense, fast, and somewhat fragmented for the away side. Arsenal’s defense showed some instability, particularly when Barry penetrated the penalty area, but Timber quickly intervened to prevent a goal.

After enduring Everton’s pressure for about 15 minutes, Arsenal gradually regained control and improved their possession. Zubimendi fired the first notable shot but it went over the crossbar, while Gyokeres missed a header narrowly off the post. Nevertheless, the London team’s control of the game became increasingly evident.

The decisive moment came in the 27th minute when Jake O'Brien handled the ball inside the penalty area from a corner by Declan Rice. After consulting VAR, the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Gyokeres calmly converted from 11 meters to put Arsenal ahead. Remarkably, captain Martin Odegaard willingly gave up the penalty kick to the Swedish striker, a rare gesture in recent two seasons.

This goal ended Gyokeres’ five-game goal drought and marked his return from injury. More importantly, it gave Arsenal the confidence to play more solidly and disciplined for the remainder of the match. The first half ended with a slim lead for the visitors, while Everton failed to register any significant shots.

In the second half, Everton fought back strongly and created several dangerous moments. There were multiple penalty appeals inside Arsenal’s box reviewed by VAR, but the referee denied all for the home team. Arsenal also had chances to increase their lead when Trossard and Zubimendi struck the post consecutively, and Saka’s shot was cleared off the line by Tarkowski.

In the end, Arsenal preserved their 1-0 victory to secure all 3 points, overtaking Manchester City to return to the top of the table. Although the win was narrow, it was enough for Mikel Arteta’s side to prove their mettle in the title race and end a three-match away winless run in the Premier League.
